The International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) is the standard that determines the data elements to be recorded or transcribed in a specific sequence as the basis of the description of the resource being catalogued. In addition, the ISBD employs prescribed punctuation as a means of recognizing and displaying data elements and making them understandable independently of the language of the description.

2021 Update to the 2011 Consolidated Edition of ISBD

The 2021 Update to the 2011 Consolidated Edition of ISBD takes into account the requests by users and their cataloguing needs since the publication of the 2011 edition. It extends the coverage of ISBD to a larger array of resources and brings more organization and refinements into the description of some types of resources.

In the 2021 Update, the content of the ISBD was extended to encompass unpublished resources with focus on the manuscripts. Its ability for granular description was optimized by  integrating stipulations for the application of the ISBD to the description of component parts.  It achieved more harmonization and clarity in the stipulations for cartographic resources, and enhanced the description of astronomical cartographic resources. New elements were introduced in appropriate areas and in the glossary as required; and examples were added to the new stipulations to support implementation by the users of the standard.

The consolidated edition merges the texts of the seven specialized ISBDs (for books, maps, serials, sound recordings, computer files and other electronic resources, etc.) into a single text.

The ISBD is useful and applicable for descriptions of bibliographic resources in any type of catalogue.  In this edition the stipulations for cataloguing the various resources have been made more consistent with each other and brought up to date.  The new area 0 for content form and media type is included for the first time.  The designation of mandatory ISBD elements has been brought into conformity with the requirements for a basic level national bibliographic record as determined by the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR).
