IFLA has always worked closely with UNESCO and the involvement ranges from the Memory of the World Programme, the Information for All Programme, the World Book Capital City Series, to the Conventions of the UNESCO Cultural Sector (1954 Hague Convention, 1970 Illicit Trafficking Conventions and more). 

IFLA also participates actively in expert advice groups for the safeguarding of cultural heritage at risk (see IFLA interventions at UNESCO).

The UNESCO/PERSIST project

In the PERSIST project, UNESCO has joined forces with the International Council on Archives (ICA) and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) to enhance the sustainability of the information society by establishing continuity of preservation of and access to information. In doing so, PERSIST seeks to help secure important mechanisms of good governance and the right of access to knowledge and information.

The UNESCO/PERSIST Guidelines for the selection of digital heritage for long-term preservation to provide an overarching starting point for libraries, archives, museums and other heritage institutions when drafting their own policies on the selection of digital heritage for long-term sustainable digital preservation.
